Wolfsburg, GERMANY - The Volkswagen Group moved into the second quarter of 2008 with yet another record in global vehicle deliveries. In an increasingly difficult market environment Europe’s largest automaker delivered 568,000 vehicles in April. This represents an increase of 10.5 percent compared with the same month in 2007, and is the first time that the Group has topped the two million mark after only the first four months of a year. From January to April, the Group’s eight brands delivered 2.14 million vehicles to customers all over the world, an increase of 7.9 percent compared with the previous year. Thanks to its sustained multi-brand strategy and ever broader model diversity, growth in deliveries by the Volkswagen Group was therefore stronger than the world market, where the increase in passenger car deliveries currently runs at approximately 3 percent. In Europe, Group deliveries from January to April rose by 3.0 percent to 1.22 million vehicles, of which 1.04 million were delivered in Western Europe (plus 0.7 percent). In Germany alone, deliveries rose by 5.9 percent to 339,000 vehicles. In Central and Eastern Europe, customers took delivery of 178,000 vehicles from the Volkswagen Group (plus 18.7 percent). In Asia-Pacific, the Volkswagen Group delivered 420,000 vehicles, a rise of 26.5 percent compared with the same period in 2007. 368,000 vehicles were delivered to customers in China, an increase of 28.9 percent over the previous year.In South America, deliveries rose by 19.5 percent to 260,000 vehicles, of which 203,000 were delivered to customers in Brazil (plus 24.3 percent). In North America, deliveries totaled 159,000 vehicles (minus 4.9 percent), of which 100,000 were delivered to customers in the USA (minus 0.7 percent).Volkswagen, the Group’s highest-volume brand, delivered 1.25 million vehicles to customers worldwide during the first four months of 2008, a rise of 8.8 percent compared with the previous year. Audi grew deliveries to 338,000 vehicles, an increase of 1.7 percent. Škoda reported a 17.7 percent rise to 237,000 vehicles delivered. Seat delivered 135,000 vehicles (minus 5.9 percent). Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles grew deliveries by 14.7 percent to 171,000 units. Bentley delivered 3,200 vehicles to customers (minus 15.6 percent), Lamborghini 850 vehicles (plus 15.4 percent) and Bugatti 20 models (January to April 2007: 25).

Nürburgring 24 Hours 1-2 for Scirocco on Debut
The new Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 celebrated a super-successful track debut today (Sunday), taking the legendary Nürburgring 24 Hours by storm to record a class 1-2 and an 11th place overall finish in one of the world’s toughest races. The Scirocco of Austrian track legend Hans-Joachim Stuck and his co-drivers Jimmy Johansson, Florian Gruber and Thomas Mutsch led the way on the daunting 25 km ‘Nordschleife’ to claim top honours in the class for 2-litre turbocharged machines. It finished 11th overall, four places ahead of the sister Scirocco piloted by double World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz and his Volkswagen rally team-mates Giniel de Villiers and Dieter Depping; Stuck also took his turn at the wheel of this car to achieve a unique feat in finishing in first and second place in class. The works team’s third Scirocco, whose drivers included Volkswagen board member Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, finished the event also, taking fifth in class and 32nd overall. ‘It is a great result for the new Scirocco,’ said Dr Hackenberg. ‘The one-two in class and 11th overall in the 24-hour race underlines the sporting dynamic and reliability of the new Volkswagen coupe.’Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director, added: ‘The racing Scirocco was developed, built and tested in only 75 days. To complete the distance on one of the world’s most demanding tracks first time out, and without serious problem, speaks volumes for the excellent performance of the entire team.’The track version of the Scirocco, which is not due to start its production life until the autumn, is powered by a 2-litre TFSI petrol engine developing 325 PS and features a direct-shift transmission system utilising Volkswagen’s DSG technology.A field of 219 cars took the start of the Nürburgring 24 Hours. More than 200,000 spectators watched the event trackside.

The Audi TT clubsport quattro: Open-Top Driving Machine with over 300 hp
• Audi presents its showcar at the Wörthersee Tour• Speedster-like body with dynamic accents• Racing-like engine and suspension performanceAn open cockpit, an engine producing more than 220 kW (300 hp) and a host of technologies borrowed from the world of motorsports – the Audi TT clubsport quattro is an uncompromising driving machine. Audi is presenting an updated version of the spectacular showcar and sensation of 2007 at the Wörthersee Tour, the big meet for Audi and VW enthusiasts in Reifnitz (Kärnten), Austria, from May 21 to 25.Purism at a premium level – this was the goal that the designers and engineers set themselves for the Audi TT clubsport quattro. The low windshield is extremely flat. The A-pillars are nearly invisible, making the continuous window strip appear to be a single casting. Instead of the compartment for the soft top there are two humps behind the passenger compartment – the lines of the showcar painted in Suzuka Gray, pearl effect are intensely evocative of a speedster. Mounted in front of the humps are two massive rollover bars, which together with the strong A-pillars protect the driver and passenger if the car should roll over.
The front end is dominated by the powerful single-frame grill painted in high-gloss black. Beneath the headlamps, which feature a strip of LED daytime running lights, are large air inlets covered by horizontally split black grills.A distinctive spoiler lip optimizes downforce. When viewed from the side, the sharp contours in the sill area are every bit as striking as the boldly accentuated wheel wells, which house impressive (polished) 9x19 inch wheels shod with 255/35 tires. The track was widened by 66 millimeters (2.60 inches) versus the production TT. The rear bumper is designed as a diffuser. The fascia between the two large tailpipes of the stainless steel exhaust system emphasizes the horizontal lines and makes the car look even wider from behind. The purist style of the exterior carries over to the interior of the Audi TT clubsport quattro. The newly designed sill area emphasizes the width of the vehicle. The driver and passenger sit in racing bucket seats that offer excellent support even in extreme driving situations – on the race track, for example.
Typical Audi: aluminum in the interiorTypical for Audi is the generous use of aluminum in the interior of the showcar. The clubsport quattro sports a high-grip version of the flat-bottomed steering wheel from the production TT with aluminum shift paddles. The door pull handle and door opener are also made of aluminum, and their cut-out appearance emphasizes the lightweight design character of the concept car. The pedals also shine with aluminum. The second distinctive feature of the interior of the TT clubsport quattro is the color orange. Leather in this color provides bright highlights to the arm rests, the sides of the center tunnel, the backs of the bucket seats and the instrument cowl. The orange and white graphics of the instrument cluster clearly distinguishes it from its counterpart in the production model.
The TT clubsport quattro is a true sports car, and technology borrowed directly from the world of motorsports emphasizes this character. Even more power has been coaxed out of the 2.0 TFSI engine – the turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine breaks the magic 300 hp barrier. The exhaust system was designed to be particularly easy-breathing, and a powerful racing sound exudes from the oval tailpipes.Audi high-tech: S tronic und quattroThe two-liter engine delivers its full power to an S tronic transmission. Thanks to its dual clutch, gear changes occur extremely quickly without interrupting the flow of power and thus go virtually unnoticed. The driver can change gears manually using the shift lever or the paddles on the steering wheel, or can choose a fully automatic mode. The quattro permanent all-wheel drive system transfers the power to all four wheels. The powerful brake system from the new Audi TTS provides the stopping power. Its ventilated discs measure 340 millimeters (13.39 inches) up front and 310 millimeters (12.20 inches) at the rear.
The Audi TT clubsport quattro is a purist driving machine combining the performance of a sports car with the unique design language of Audi. Small-series production of this model cannot be ruled out.AUDI AG sold a total of 964,151 cars in 2007 and thus achieved its twelfth consecutive record year. With revenue of €33,617 million and profit before tax of €2,915 million, the company attained its best figures ever. Audi produces vehicles in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm (Germany), Györ (Hungary), Changchun (China) and Brussels (Belgium). At the end of 2007, production of the Audi A6 started in Aurangabad, India. The company is active in more than 100 markets worldwide. AUDI AG’s wholly owned subsidiaries include Lamborghini S.p.A. in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, and quattro GmbH in Neckarsulm. Audi employs more than 54,000 people worldwide, including 45,000 in Germany. The brand with the four rings invests more than € 2 billion each year in order to sustain the company’s technological lead embodied in its “Vorsprung durch Technik” slogan. Audi plans to significantly increase the number of models in its portfolio by 2015, from the 26 currently on offer to 40.

Bentley Increases Profitability Despite Slight Decrease in Sales Revenue
Crewe, ENGLAND -- Bentley Motors has announced its financial results for the first quarter, ending 31 March 2008, reporting consistent profitability despite a slight decrease in sales. Bentley net revenue decreased by €15m or 4.4% to €338mn compared to the first quarter of 2007, primarily due to exchange rate effects. However, operating profit increased by €1m to €39m compared to the same period in 2007. Global sales declined by 17.8% in the first quarter of 2008, reaching 2,292 units. This was almost entirely attributable to calendarisation, with the first quarter of 2007 having seen the very successful launch of the Continental GTC which, like most new model introductions, attracted considerable initial sales before settling down to a more consistent sales pace throughout the year. Taking out this seasonal adjustment, the sales pace in 2008 is broadly consistent with 2007.North American sales were down around 22%, in particular on the west coast and in southern regions, which have been affected by the credit crisis and declining property markets. However, strong growth in emerging markets such as China, up 133.3%, and the Middle East, up 10.4%, is having a compensatory effect.Arnage and Azure family sales decreased by 15.9% in the first quarter; however, with deliveries of Brooklands beginning, sales are expected to increase in the second quarter. Strong demand continues for the Continental GT Speed resulting in a first quarter sales increase of +20.8% across the Continental GT model line.“Coming after a milestone year in 2007 when the company surpassed the 10,000 model sales mark for the first time, these results were to be expected”, said Stuart McCullough, Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “However, when we take into consideration the fast start we achieved in 2007 with the Continental GTC and the nervousness that surrounds the financial markets, then Bentley sales are proving to be very resilient, and our overall pace remains similar to last year.“The most exciting element is undoubtedly the strong growth we are seeing in new markets. Customers are benefiting from an increasing sales network and some exciting new models, most recently the GT Speed and the limited edition Brooklands coupe, which has received a fantastic reception. As a result, we still expect our annual sales performance to be at around the same level as 2007, but also to maintain our profitability despite the challenging exchange rate impacts.”

AUTObiography: Meatstick62's 2007 VW GTI
ext up is VWvortex reader: Meatstick62
How long have you owned this car?Just about one year.Is there anything unique about the history of this car? Nothing in particular, besides that it’s my first VW and certainly won’t be my last. Why did you choose this car to purchase? I saw a comparison between the MKV GTI and the Civic Si in a magazine. I was in the market for a new car and as soon as I saw the picture of that Tornado Red GTI, I knew that it was the one. What other cars did you consider? Mazdaspeed3, Acura RSX.What was your objective with this car? To build a car that was trackable and looked good on the street. What tuning style best describes this car (ex. Euro, Bling, OEMplus, street racer, auto crosser)?A bit of street racer and auto crosser since I kept it able to look and do both.
Who helped you build this car? My dad, brothers, friends, and local shops. What makes your car special? It was just a dream to have a car that looked and performed like this. I would read car magazines and imagine what it would be like to drive something that wasn’t a rusted out S10. I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. What is your favorite part/feature/function? I love the DSG. It is, hands down, the best feature on the MKV. It was the main selling point for me. I still make an effort to find as many tunnels as I can and just tap away on those paddles. Who or what inspired the direction of modifications on this car? Seeing cars at shows like Waterfest and at track days gave me a lot of inspiration. Talking to VW drivers and enthusiasts about what they have done or would do to their cars was also a big factor. What don't you like about this car? The fact that I couldn’t get the Interlagos plaid Recaro seats that GTI buyers in Europe can get. What was your biggest obstacle in building this car? Trying to build a car while graduating from high school, applying to college, and working. How did you overcome the issue? Very good time management.
What would you change if you could? If I could, I would lighten the car a bit. Maybe put in some Recaro seats. On a scale of 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with the outcome of this project? 9.5.What would you do to the car if money were no object? Bigger turbo, water/methanol injection, carbon fiber body panels, wider fenders to fit in bigger rubber.Who has been your biggest critic of this project? My parents have always been a bit wary of the time and money I’ve put in the car, but they’ve still been supportive. What do your family and friends say about this car? Like me, they think it came out well. Even though I go to college in Florida, my friends back home like it when I update them on any new additions. What is your most memorable/humorous/embarrassing moment with this car? Every track day has been memorable. Each time I take it out to the track, I think, “Man, am I glad I bought this car.”Has this car competed in any events? Results? I’ve never used it in timed racing, but it sure does hold its own and then some. What is your favorite place to drive this car? The favorite place I’ve driven it was the Shenandoah Circuit at Summit Point Motorsports Park in WV.What is your ideal day with this car? A nice sunny day at the track and a fresh set of tires.
Who gets to drive this car? Mainly me, and whoever offers to help me wash and wax it or put some gas in it. If your car had a motto, what would it be? “Slower traffic keep right.”What was your previous project? I didn’t have one. What is your next project? I’ve always wanted to build a slammed MKI with poked wheels, stretched tires, and matte paint. Low and slow. What one word best describes your car? Clean. Bentley Motors Designs Llimited Collector’s Edition of New Bond Book, Devil May Care
n a unique collaboration between three of Britain’s iconic brands – James Bond, Bentley Motors and Penguin Books - a special, limited edition of the new Bond book Devil May Care will be published on 28th May. Written by Sebastian Faulks at the invitation of Ian Fleming Publications to celebrate the Ian Fleming centenary, Devil May Care is one of the most eagerly anticipated publications of 2008.Cars and James Bond have always had a strong association and, contrary to popular belief, Bond’s preference has historically been firmly with Bentley Motors. He owned three Bentleys in the course of the fourteen original novels written by Ian Fleming. It is fitting therefore that in Devil May Care - published to coincide with the centenary of Ian Fleming’s birth - Bond is found once again in the driving seat of his favourite car.To mark the reunion, Penguin approached Bentley to produce a luxury, limited edition of Devil May Care. The result is a beautiful and striking edition which takes its inspiration from hard-covers of the original 1950s and 1960s Bond books combined with the stylish Bentley owner’s manuals and handbooks of the era. Inside the book is a specially designed model pewter Bentley, described in detail by Fleming in Thunderball.Bentley Chief Designer Dirk van Braeckel says, “Transferring our design knowledge from the car world to a book was a new challenge for us, but working closely with Penguin, we think we have come up with a unique product which is complementary to the history of Bentley and Bond that can be appreciated by all.”Only 300 copies of the Special Series edition will be produced, costing £750 each, available exclusively from the Penguin James Bond books website (www.penguin007.com).The designEvoking the feeling of the Cold War period in which Devil May Care is set, the edition is bound in Bodoniana style cases and finished in burnt oak leather sourced from the tannery in Italy which provides the hides for Bentley’s interiors. The iconic Bentley diamond pattern found on the radiator grille and upholstery of modern Bentley’s, is hand-stitched on the leather casing and the front cover and spine is finished with the silver Bentley ‘Flying B’ – the radiator cap of the Bentley’s of Bond’s time. The inside of the casing is trimmed in deep red hotspur leather and has the striking fluting used on the 1950’s and 1960’s Bentley interior upholstery. Each book has a unique edition number embossed on a black aluminium plate produced the same company that makes the Bentley engine plates.Fleming described in detail a modified Bentley R type in Thunderball and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service which Bond loving called ‘the Locomotive’. The car never existed but, using Fleming’s exact specifications, a cast and polished 1:43 scale model of the car has been hand crafted by Bentley for this edition. The miniature is inserted into the book in a car-shaped hole and is individually numbered to match the plate on the inside cover. Each book is protected by a custom-made Plexiglass slip case, which will be sealed in protective and numbered wrapping.Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks will be published in hardback by Penguin Books in the UK and by Doubleday in the US on 28 May.

Gentlemen, start your engines! VW Premieres Scirocco GT24 with 320hp
Wolfsburg, 22 May 2008 - Volkswagen will present the world premiere of a 239 kW (325 PS) version of the new Scirocco today at the legendary GTI Meet at Wörther Lake. For two days later, a team of legendary drivers will start the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in the sports version of the Scirocco. Thus, the new Scirocco will be in the spotlight at two cult events for car enthusiasts at the same time.Volkswagen is presenting the racing version of the Scirocco GT24 at Wörther Lake in a world premiere. "This car doesn't need to be driven to look fast. The Scirocco GT24 with the blue-white finish sits so low on its extended wheel wells that a hand will not fit between the wheel arch and the tyre. Yet the race car remains unmistakeably a Scirocco from every angle. Just even wider, even longer and even lower," says Volkswagen Chairman for Development Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, who will not be passing up the opportunity to sit behind the wheel in the race in the Eiffel. The 325 PS Scirocco will also be driven during the race by legendary drivers like rally world champion Carlos Sainz and Hans-Joachim Stuck, three-time winner of the 24-hour Nürburgring race. Incidentally, "Striezel" Stuck won the very first 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in 1970. Now, thirty-eight years later, the Scirocco GT24 is competing. It draws its power from only two litres displacement: the 16-valve direct injection engine with a turbocharger and intercooler delivers its maximum torque of 340 Newton metres beginning from only 2,100 rpm. Gear changes are executed by a dual clutch gearbox (DSG), which is also available for the production model. The idea of an affordable dream car was born in the 70s with the first Scirocco. The success of this two-seat sport coupe continued for nearly 20 years, during which time more than 360,000 Sciroccos were built. The enthusiasm for this car has been uninterrupted since Volkswagen presented the new version of the Scirocco at this year's Geneva Motor Show. The new car appears to have struck a chord with car buyers and will pick up with the success of the original Scirocco which, in the mean time, has developed into a cult car.

Bentley Racing Green
Crewe, Monday 28th April 2008… A Bentley Motors apprentice team has won a special “Spirit of Greenpower” award for its performance in the Greenpower Corporate Challenge which took place at Goodwood race circuit yesterday. The Bentley apprentice team designed, engineered and built the electric powered car which they entered into the Greenpower Challenge as well as a season of “F24+” racing. The Bentley Greenpower car is called Continental DC (Direct Current) and runs off a 24-volt motor supplied by two 12-volt batteries. Designed for lightness and maximum power efficiency the one-seater Continental DC has a carbon fibre chassis and low resistance tyres.Greenpower is a series of events which aims to promote greater interest in young people to follow careers in the fields of engineering and technology. The 2008 Greenpower corporate challenge held yesterday was the first race of the season. 25 teams entered, comprising 15 school entries and 10 company teams. The Bentley team achieved their goal of completing the four hour race, despite some technical difficulties in the first section. The award was given in recognition of their excellent team spirit which they showed in overcoming these initial technical challenges. The F24+ season consists of eight 90-minute endurance race events which will culminate in a grand final at Goodwood in October. Race tracks on the F24+ schedule include Dunsfold, Rockingham, Croft and Aintree. The Bentley Motors team is composed of nine of the company’s apprentices who are all following a three or four year apprenticeship scheme at the factory in Crewe. Margaret Cheshire, Head of People and Organisational Development at Bentley Motors said, “It’s fantastic that the apprentices are not only gaining the technical skills associated with building a car but are also increasing their knowledge of other areas of the business such as finance, purchasing and public relations.” She continued, “It’s all about giving the individuals knowledge and expertise to be successful in their future careers after the completion of the Bentley apprenticeship programme.” Having taken the initiative themselves to compete in the Greenpower challenge the apprentices have devoted weekends and evenings for the past ten months taking full responsibility for all aspects of the car’s development. Three team members acted as drivers on race day, the rest of the team provided essential back-up support in the pits. Tom Hodgson, Greenpower team manager added, “In building the car we pooled the expertise and resources from across the business to produce a project of which we’re all proud. Having completed our first race we now know what we have to do to be successful for the rest of the 2008 Greenpower season. The experience of developing a project from idea to race-day was exhilarating. It was also hugely satisfying to see the positive support from sponsors keen to help the Bentley team”.

AUTObiography: Wraith04's 1990 VW Jetta
Next up is VWvortex reader: Wraith04
How long have you owned this car?Well, I just sold it for the second time on Saturday [May] 10th. This time I have owned it for about a year and a half. I had owned it prior but sold it when the collection of cars got out of hand. Luckily it was sold to a good friend with the condition that if it went back up for sale, I had first dibs.Is there anything unique about the history of this car? Nope, just a standard three-owner car that had been faithfully used as daily transportation until I purchased it and tore it up.Why did you choose this car to purchase? At the time I was looking for a GTI to buy but I couldn’t find a clean one anywhere. One day while out driving around I found this coupe sitting beside the road for sale and being that you don’t see coupes everyday, I decided it might be better to be different. What other cars did you consider? At the time I also had a one-owner ‘85 Jetta sedan that was immaculate but I couldn’t bring myself to modify it too much, so that put the search out for another car; also, the wife hated the sedan because it was blue. What was your objective with this car?To build a car that I can drive every day, be reliable, and have as much fun as possible in. It succeeded at all of those tasks.
What tuning style best describes this car?I’d guess I would call it Euro. Who helped you build this car?Lots of help and support came from the group at Blitz Rennsport even though we are spread across four states. Cingular gladly took my money as countless hours were spent on the phone hammering out the details. What makes your car special? To me it’s special because it was built by me/for me in my own garage. What is your favorite part/feature/function? I would have to say the Megasquirt engine management and the crossflow swap. It changed the complete demeanor of the car and made it a lot of fun to drive and much easier to tune. Well, that and the brake and clutch pedals.Who or what inspired the direction of modifications on this car? Most of my inspiration came from Performance VW magazines over the years and a lot of time spent surfing the web for creative/innovative ideas. What don't you like about this car? I’d have to say the fact that I really wanted a hatch, but I’ve gotten over that now.
What was your biggest obstacle in building this car? Can I say my wife? Just kidding, she was always supportive unless the checkbook got low on funds. I would say trying to keep a budget but still accomplishing my goals for the car.How did you overcome the issue?Lots of creativity, junkyard shopping along with a lot of horse trading on several forums. What would you change if you could? If the money was no object I’d have a 2.0T FSI with DSG in it but until then the 8v will make do.On a scale of 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with the outcome of this project? Where it is now, about an 8… I [was] shooting for a 9.5.What would you do to the car if money were no object? The aforementioned 2.0 FSI, DSG, maybe a rear wheel drive conversion.Who has been your biggest critic of this project? No critics that I can speak of, I don’t have time for them anyway. What do your family and friends say about this car? Most of them think I am nuts for going to a VW but there is more of a challenge to building one than a lot of the other cars available.
What is your most memorable/humorous/embarrassing moment with this car?Driving up an insanely steep hill in Eureka Springs, Arkansas in second gear, demonstrating its hill climbing abilities with three other people in the car.Has this car competed in any events?A few, but I guess it’s not nice enough for the judges. I love getting beat by a stock ‘87 GTI.What is your favorite place to drive this car? I enjoy it so much I just get a kick out of just driving to the gas station for a Red Bull. What is your ideal day with this car? A day spent in Eureka Springs, Arkansas with the windows down enjoying the turns.Who gets to drive this car? No one but me and a few select friends. If your car had a motto, what would it be? Don’t take your car so seriously that you can’t enjoy it anymore.
If you had to name your car, what would you name it? No names here, never believed in them for a car. But I’m not saying I don’t talk to her. What was your previous project?Previous project was a MKIII VR Jetta, not enough character. What is your next project? Next project should be back to where I started with a classic car again. I have a ‘72 Cutlass waiting in the wings for a little attention, but I had another VW in the garage before the coupe even left. What one word best describes your car? Mine.Anything else you’d like to share? At the end of the day, whatever you drive, it’s only a car.Owner InformationName: Jon EberleVWvortex username: Wraith04Occupation: GlazierClub affiliations: Blitz RennsportVehicle InformationYear: 1990Make: VolkswagenModel: Jetta GLMileage: 150,000Original Color: Light Sahara MetallicCurrent Color: Light Sahara MetallicEngine: 2.0 ABA CrossflowEngine modifications: Megasquirt stand alone, Autotech 270 cam, Autotech adjustable cam gear, filter on a stick, G60 injectors, Innovate wide band, urethane rear mount, BFI solid front mount, engine harness relocated to frame railsExhaust modifications: Factory dual downpipe, Magnaflow high flow catalytic convertor, Techtonics cat backTransmission modifications: Eurosport short shift kit, MKIII weighted shift rod, Royal Purple gear lube, Eurospec lightened flywheel, 16v pressure plateSuspension modifications: B&G RS coilovers, VR strut mountsBrake modifications: 11” Corrado calipers and rotors, MKIII spindles, Autotech stainless lines, Mintex padsWheels and tires: 15”x8” BBS RFs, 195/45/15 Toyo T1RsExterior/body modifications: Polished Fox handles, Scirocco single wiper conversion, factory E-codes, color matched core supportInterior modifications: BBS knock-off steering wheel, gauges and switches changed to blue lighting, custom door pocket speaker podsAudio/video/I.C.E.: Pioneer CD player with iPod hook-up, 3.5”s in the dash, 5.25”s in the doorsThanks/props: Adrian, Kevin, William and everyone else at Blitz Rennsport. AUTObiography: Wells' 1990 VW Corrado
ext up is VWvortex reader: Wells
How long have you owned this car? Seven months so far. Is there anything unique about the history of this car? Everybody on the Corrado forum knows it. It also lacks a sunroof and ABS, which makes it pretty rare. Why did you choose this car to purchase? I wanted something fresh and unique. Pulling up to the same car at a stoplight got old. What other cars did you consider? There were a couple, but when my car was up on the classifieds, I knew I had to have it. What was your objective with this car? To keep it clean, sexy and fast as possible.
What tuning style best describes this car (ex. Euro, Bling, OEMplus, street racer, auto crosser)? I guess euroemplusautocrosser! It does it all, quite well, actually.Who helped you build this car? Mostly myself, but my friends Kendall and Sean are the best people to know when you need help. What makes your car special? It’s in amazing shape and I thank the previous owners for that. What is your favorite part/feature/function? Probably a fight between the HIDs and the rear spoiler. But the coolest feature is the neck breaking device. Who or what inspired the direction of modifications on this car? I do what looks right to me, asking peoples’ opinions along the way. What don't you like about this car? The rattles that I’ve yet to fix. What was your biggest obstacle in building this car? Money, mostly. How did you overcome the issue? Scrounge the money up as best I can.
What would you change if you could? I’d make my tax return come faster so I can get my Lysholm. On a scale of 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with the outcome of this project? 9. Probably be a 10 when the Lysholm gets here. What would you do to the car if money were no object?Syncro, that’s about it. Maybe treat her to a paint job.Who has been your biggest critic of this project? Myself, mostly. What do your family and friends say about this car? It’s the first car my father has liked of mine, and the most part, my friends would trade their cars for it.What is your most memorable/humorous/embarrassing moment with this car? It’s got that typical bad ground that I’ve never fixed and it likes to not start. In front of people, all the time.Has this car competed in any events? Results? Autocrossed it last year, got a lot of compliments, didn’t place. Hopefully I’ll do better this year.
What is your favorite place to drive this car? Everywhere. It really makes me feel special. What is your ideal day with this car? Sunny, ~70 degrees, windows down, blasting some tunes.Who gets to drive this car? Me mostly, and I’ve let a couple of my friends drive it. If your car had a motto, what would it be? I have no idea.If you had to name your car, what would you name it? No idea. What was your previous project? I had a pretty cool MKIV VR6 GTI, and a ‘91 GTI.What is your next project? No idea, only time can tell.

D.C. United and Volkswagen Ink Landmark Sponsorship Deal
Washington, D.C. (May 6, 2008) – D.C. United and Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced a five-year partnership agreement that will see the two brands join forces in a landmark deal that includes Volkswagen’s logo on the shirts of the most successful team in the history of American professional soccer. Volkswagen will also be prominently featured through a variety of other club and in-stadium marketing components. United will debut the new uniforms on national television Thursday night when the club hosts the Chicago Fire. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at RFK Stadium.“As with all of our important decisions, we took a very strategic approach to engaging the market of potential jersey sponsors,” said United President and CEO Kevin Payne. “We wanted to be sure we found the right partner, and on the right terms. We're thrilled to have this relationship now with Volkswagen, which is ideal from our point of view -- a multi-national company with a strong brand, a cultural understanding of our game, a commitment to our community, and a reputation for thinking a bit out of the box. For us, VW is a perfect partner.”In addition to the traditional advertising and promotional benefits often found in sponsorship agreements, Volkswagen was insistent on providing the fans of D.C. United some added value while attending games at RFK Stadium. Volkswagen’s fan initiatives include the Volkswagen Garage, a new interactive area located behind the north goal at RFK Stadium. The Volkswagen Garage will serve as a hospitality area and vehicle showroom with space for 1,000 people. The Garage offers a unique brand experience and features: soccer based car games, FIFA Xbox 360 stations, live T-shirt screen printing, branded merchandise, hammocks and Adirondack chairs for relaxation, and a whole lot more. Volkswagen will also be a participating sponsor of D.C. United’s Soccer Celebration located in Parking Lot 8.“The ‘brand’ we put on our jersey is extremely important to us,” said United Co-managing Partner Victor MacFarlane. “We believe that the D.C. United brand stands for something significant and the ‘brand’ on the front of our jersey has to be compatible with our vision. Volkswagen fulfilled and exceeded our wishes. They are a company committed to excellence and customer service with an international reputation for both. Will Chang and I are delighted they have become our new partners.”On game days, Volkswagen’s commitment to the fan experience will extend beyond the stadium and soccer celebration. All fans driving to United’s match on Thursday, against Chicago, will be treated to complimentary parking, courtesy of the new presenting sponsor. Going forward, the first 50 Volkswagens to enter lot 4 on gamedays will also be treated to a complimentary spot.“Since Volkswagen is new to the greater Washington D.C. area, we wanted to find opportunities to support the local community and D.C. United was an obvious choice,” said Stefan Jacoby, president and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. “D.C. United is a great soccer team, committed to success both on and off the pitch. The team philosophy, mission and fans closely mirror our own corporate philosophy and customer base.”In addition to the partnership with D.C. United, Major League Soccer and Volkswagen today announced a partnership that makes Volkswagen the official automotive partner of Major League Soccer. The partnership delivers MLS league and collective team marks and logos and marketing assets at league events such as the Pepsi MLS All-Star Game and MLS Cup, Major League Soccer’s championship game.“We’re excited to partner with Volkswagen, a global brand with tradition in Football, Fútbol and Soccer,” said Doug Quinn, president of Soccer United Marketing. “With Volkswagen’s roots already embedded in the sport, this is a partnership that makes sense at both the club and league level.”Volkswagen’s jersey sponsorship element makes the company the first group to adorn the front of United’s shirt in club history. Traditionally, the space is recognized as the most valuable inventory a soccer club has to offer and is reserved for a crest that supports the team, sharing in the organizational goals and ideals. Authentic and replica jerseys and other merchandise are now available in the D.C. United team store at RFK Stadium or by calling 202-546-7023. Fans that have previously purchased a 2008 authentic or replica jersey are able to have a Volkswagen logo added to their merchandise, courtesy of Volkswagen, by visiting the team store or the jersey stand inside C gate on game days.Elements of the new alliance will be on display Thursday night, when United hosts Chicago. Tickets to the match are available at www.dcunited.com or by calling 202-587-5000. From the Armchair - GLI Expanded - by: George Achorn
Funny thing about the GLI. It’s an American phenomenon and a non-issue everywhere else. Jettas are for old people says a German friend of mine – a transplant who is now living in the USA. And that’s the case really. America’s GTI-spec Jetta sells solely in the USA – no surprise as the Jetta is the best-selling European car Stateside. Still, maybe expanding the GLI sub-brand in America and Europe might be a shrewd maneuver as performance enthusiasts also begin to feel the bite of fuel prices and the guilt of global warming. The GTI name and the heritage that goes with it are an asset to be sure for Volkswagen. Thing is, be it Golf, Rabbit, Polo or Lupo, the GTI is a hot hatch pure and simple. Days of slapping that moniker on cars outside the hot hatch spectrum such as the rare Scirocco GTI are long gone. The ground is now too hallowed. Not so with GLI. GLI is a sedan to Americans and an enigma to everyone else. But, GTI owners often grow up, make babies and grow out of their GTIs. Enter the Passat.
This generation Passat has been a bit less loved by Volkswagen’s loyal owner group. Lackluster equipment packages except for the Euro-only R36 haven’t helped things and it can no longer boast being the “affordable Audi” as was the B5 generation with its Audi chassis and drivetrain sharing. Nevertheless, this car is a solid package underneath and I suspect it might be a bit better received if it had a younger spin. That brings us back to the GLI name. Imagine, if you will, a Passat sedan and wagon that subscribe to the same philosophy as the GTI. Blacken the car’s chrome snout, add a red border to its grille and give it a more aggressive chin – maybe lifted wholesale from the R36. Throw in some bolstered sport seats with the GTI’s trademark plaid surfaces, along with the Jetta GLI’s flat-bottomed sport steering wheel and accenting red stitching. Ditch the car’s Tiptronic transmission for DSG and offer a manual. Fit a set of 19-inch GTI-design 5-spoke alloys and tune the suspension to handle more like a GTI and I suspect you’d have a real winner.
If Volkswagen wanted to get really trick, they could opt for the 280hp 2.0T variant now fitted to the Audi S3 and federalized with DSG transmission for future sale in the US in the upcoming Audi TTS. Add the electronic limited slip differential that VWoA has been playing with in some of their own in-house GTIs and this’d be the icing on the proverbial cake.Want to play the green card even more? Volkswagen could take their Jetta TDI Sport model, basically a GLI with a TDI engine, and expand on that as well. With a Passat GLI sedan and wagon in the lineup, this sort of sporting diesel expansion would offer even more possibilities.
If you think about it, Volkswagen is probably the best placed brand to capitalize upon such market expansion. Sporting models of the Ford Fusion or Toyota Camry simply aren’t credible to those growing out of the sport compact car market be they GTI owners or drivers of Japanese cars like the WRX or Lancer. A Passat GLI, on the other hand, would be perfect for those looking for honest-to-goodness performance without the gluttonous fuel consumption that comes with more cylinders. Even Europe and its retirement home understanding of the Jetta might accept the badge were it adorned to the Passat and especially Passat variant.

Volkswagen's New Beetle Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary
HERNDON, VA--- Volkswagen of America, Inc. celebrates the 10-year anniversary of the introduction of the New Beetle. Originally unveiled as a design study car called “Concept 1” at the North American International Auto Show in 1994, the New Beetle made its worldwide debut in 1998. Over the last decade the New Beetle has solidified its place in American pop culture, transcending consumers’ age, income, education and gender to connect classic Beetle enthusiasts with contemporary audiences.“We are extremely proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the New Beetle, an iconic vehicle that has made a remarkable impact on automotive and pop culture history,” said Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volkswagen of America, Inc. “The New Beetle is a true reflection of Volkswagen’s commitment to individuality, design and pure driving pleasure.”Often referred to by its affectionate nickname, “The Bug,” the enthusiasm and nostalgia sparked by the introduction ten years ago continues to surround the New Beetle today. From the custom paint jobs to personalized modifications and from its fan clubs to its prosperous Hollywood film career, the New Beetle is an undeniable fixture in pop culture.Although it borrowed general design cues from its classic predecessor, the New Beetle remains a completely contemporary creation. The New Beetle evolved to incorporate engineering advances including a redesigned chassis and a water-cooled front engine. With its sloping headlamps, large round tail lights and arched roofline, the vehicle features distinct styling. The New Beetle's iconic silhouette is now considered the most easily recognized profile in automotive history (J. D. Power and Associates). Since its introduction, Volkswagen has continued to enhance the vehicle’s unique combination of innovative design and engineering to meet the changing needs of consumers. Since the New Beetle Sedan’s debut in 1998, Volkswagen has also launched a New Beetle Convertible model, featuring a three-layer cloth top with a heated glass rear window for year-round fun.Volkswagen has also upgraded both the New Beetle Sedan and the New Beetle Convertible models with premium option packages, enhanced safety features, auxiliary center console iPod jack and redesigned interior aesthetics. The legendary “Inspiration Pod” is not just for flowers anymore; it’s encouraged to be used as a means of self-expression. The New Beetle’s exterior continues to match its playful silhouette, currently offered in a distinctly vibrant color palette including Laser Blue, Gecko Green, Salsa Red, Harvest Moon, Platinum Gray, Black, Reflex Silver and Sunflower Yellow. The New Beetle Sedan and New Beetle Convertible remain strong sellers for the brand, with total U.S. sales exceeding 500,000 units as of April 2008. Since its introduction, over 1 million units have been produced worldwide.Volkswagen of America, Inc.Founded in 1955, Volkswagen of America, Inc. is headquartered in Herndon, Virginia. Pennsylvania Deutsch: Volksfest 2008
Heading out to central Pennsylvania’s Volksfest show is a bit like stepping back in time. Beyond the prodigious mix of great-looking early water-cooled VWs and masses of vintage air-cooled cars, Volksfest offers a refresher on the roots of the VW show scene.
To some, it might be surprising that VWs are as prevalent as they are in such a relatively rural region. Go to equally populated sections of the country and Volkswagen might not be as popular, but the strong German heritage in the area drives the hobby more than you might expect. Pennsylvania Dutch is a dialect more commonly attributed to the local Amish culture, but Germans of all types settled in the region years and years ago. This is one reason why one of the original VW dealers in the nation opened its doors in nearby Lancaster, PA when the German manufacturer first started selling cars in the States.
It’s not So-Cal, but there remains a strong cult-like following for air-cooled VWs in the area, and that’s always been a mainstay of the Volksfest show. After all, it’s organized and put on by the local Harrisburg Area Volkswagen Owners Club (HAVOC), which started out as an air-cooled focused organization back in the day.
Of course, water-cooleds are now classics as well, and there’s no shortage of local modern cars, either. From numerous MKV R32s and EOSs to great-looking MKI cars, Volksfest attracts them equally.
Also stepping a bit back in time, the vendor area is dominated by local folks trucking out used parts, as with swap meets of old. Local tuners like APTuning appreciably support the event year after year, though most of the vendor field has stayed low-glitz, where you’re more likely to strike up a deal over a dashboard or quarter panel laying in the grass or back of an old pickup, than you are to wait in mile-long lines for a chip flashing.
Volksfest remains a regional show, though it draws groups in from a surprisingly wide area. We’re always reminded of this as we head out of the small hamlet of Campelltown, PA, passing a motel dominated by a Long Island VW club — banners waving in the air.
Even better, if you’re making the drive in from very far away, there’s added motivation to make sure Volksfest finds a spot on your calendar. Each year, the VW event is held just miles away from the largest Porsche-only swap meet in the USA, held in nearby Hershey. Both happen on Saturday, but their proximity and size make hitting both doable, so long as rain hasn’t scared people off of the respective fields.
If you’re looking for a refresher of what grass-roots and club-sponsored shows were like before the VW hobby got so large, Volksfest should be at the top of your list. A relaxed atmosphere on the grounds of a local fire department, Volksfest takes on a laid-back and intimate atmosphere and is an excellent way to spend a sunny April afternoon.

Volkswagen Group Records Profit Growth at All Brands in First Quarter
Wolfsburg, GERMANY – Volkswagen Group Continues Success Story. The Group delivered more vehicles, increased sales revenue and recorded a sharp rise in profit in the first quarter of 2008. “The success of our products shows that our new model rollout is meeting with an excellent response from our customers”, said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, on Wednesday, presenting the quarterly report. “At the same time, our process improvement efforts and our strict cost discipline are paying off”, added CFO Hans Dieter Pötsch. The Volkswagen Group delivered 1.57 million vehicles worldwide in the first three months, an increase of 7 percent. Sales revenue grew by 1.4 percent to €27.0 billion. Operating profit rose by 21 percent to €1.3 billion. Profit after tax was €929 million, an increase of approximately 26 percent. “In light of these figures, we can be very confident about the further development of our business”, according to Winterkorn. The strong acceptance of the Group’s attractive range of models was also reflected in the earnings power of the individual brands. “All of the Group's brands recorded an improvement in their operating profit”, said Pötsch. The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand increased its operating profit to €461 million (€386 million) from January through March. The negative impact of unfavorable exchange rates was more than offset by the increase in sales volume and further improvements in material costs. The Audi brand reported year-on-year growth of €113 million to €514 million. The figures for the Lamborghini brand, which are contained in the key figures for Audi, recorded positive growth. The Škoda brand also increased its operating profit to €182 million (€172 million). Thanks to the continued earnings enhancement program, SEAT recorded an operating profit of €12 million, following an operating loss of €11 million in the prior year. The Bentley brand increased its operating profit to €39 million (€38 million). At Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the strong sales situation and cost optimization measures were reflected in an improvement in operating profit to €103 million (€66 million). The Financial Services Division again made a significant contribution to the Volkswagen Group's profit. At €276 million, its operating profit exceeded the previous year’s level by €18 million.Liquidity increased in the Automotive Division. Net liquidity improved by a further €0.7 billion compared with the 2007 year-end to €14.2 billion as a result of the improved profit situation and the continued disciplined investment strategy. The ratio of investments in property, plant and equipment (capex) to sales revenue remained below the long-term average at 3.9 percent (3.2 percent). For the current year, the Board of Management continues to expect business to develop positively despite the tough operating environment. New market segments are being developed and the product portfolio is being selectively expanded. As a result, deliveries to customers will be above the previous year’s record level. Demand for Group vehicles will increase substantially, especially in the Asia-Pacific, Central and Eastern Europe, and South America regions. Based on the continued disciplined cost management, improving processes and the new model rollout, the Volkswagen Group believes that it will exceed the previous year’s figures for deliveries, sales revenue and operating profit in 2008.
